Smiles

Smiles raised high

Like glasses of toasted champagne

Tend to numb the mind

From waves of heightened pain.

Isn’t it funny that a thing of celebration

Can be turned inside out

And applied with acceleration

As a token of grief?

We see it so often

As shields are displayed

Smiling to the coffin

With our defensive masquerade.

When someone smiles we tend to brush right past

Dismissing any thought

That perhaps there’s a struggle going on

Perhaps they want to get caught.

We all feel it some days-

Like a want of water in the ocean

Like we’re drifting off to sea

As we row through the motions.

Just know you’re not alone

As life you’re passing through

There is someone you know

Who is alone too.
